Regents approve appointment of Shirley J. Daniel to key position

UH Regents today approved the appointment of Professor Shirley J. Danielas the Henry A. Walker, Jr., Distinguished Professor of Business Enterprisein the UH Manoa College of Business Administration (CBA).

The Walker Chair is the oldest endowed Chair in the College, endowedby Amfac Corporation in 1982. The Chair serves as a leader and catalystfor research, instruction and practical application of public-private businesspartnerships.

CBA Dean David McClain occupied the Chair prior to his appointment asdean. He has steered the professorship in the direction of entrepreneurshipin the college's three major academic thrusts - international business,information technology and executive education, particularly in an AsiaPacific context. An international search was conducted, during which Danielemerged as the top candidate for the position.

"It's especially fitting that Shirley Daniel be appointed to thisprestigious chair at the College," McClain said. "She's an academicand community leader in entrepreneurship and international business, justas Henry A. Walker, Jr., was. She has brought nearly $15 million in grantsto the College as director of our Pacific Asian Management Institute, ourCenter for International Business Education and Research, and most recentlyour Center for Entrepreneurship and E-business.

"We're especially proud that her efforts have made the College thehost of the Native Hawaiian Leadership and 'Gear Up' grants that increaseaccess to higher education for native Hawaiians and low- and middle-incomefamilies."

Daniel came to UH in 1987 after receiving her doctorate at Oklahoma StateUniversity. She has been a full professor in the School of Accountancysince 1995.
