UH West O‘ahu Executive Producer a Candidate for Fulbright Specialists Roster

UH West Oʻahu Center for Labor Education & Research (CLEAR) Faculty Specialist and Executive Producer, Chris Conybeare was recently approved as a candidate on the Fulbright Specialists Roster.



The roster comprises approved candidates who are eligible to be matched with incoming program requests from overseas academic institutions for Fulbright Specialists. As a member of this prestigious roster, Conybeare may be called upon to collaborate with colleagues from international institutions and programs requesting his journalism and media expertise; supported with grant opportunities from the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State and the Council for International Exchange of Scholars. These organizations support international scholarly exchanges vital to academic and professional communities around the world.



A former Fulbright Scholar on the faculty of Marmara University in Istanbul, Turkey, Conybeare worked with the Press Council of Turkey and studied press freedom in Turkey and transitional democracies in the region. He received his Juris Doctorate from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1971. Conybeare‘s area of interest includes human rights and media policy. He has been the volunteer secretary general of the World Association of Press Councils since 2004 and president of the Honolulu Community Media Council since 2006.



Conybeare has a long and distinguished career in media production. He produced the television series, "Rice & Roses" for CLEAR beginning in 1982 as well as numerous documentaries on Hawaiʻi‘s labor history and workplace culture, including "Jack Hall: His Life &Times" (2008). Conybeare served as executive producer of News and Public Affairs at Hawaiʻi Public Television, producing a variety of local programming. He has also produced national programming for PBS and was executive producer and managing editor of the international news program, "Asia Now," co-produced by PBS stations and Japan‘s NHK.



Conybeare has been active in the labor movement for much of his life. He is a former member of the American Federation of TV and Radio Artists where he served as local chapter president, and national board member, and is now a member of the University of Hawaiʻi Professional Assembly.
