On Saturday, July 26th from 6-9 p.m. the UH Sea Grant Hanauma Bay Education Program will invite the public to explore Hawaiian ocean culture and traditions.

In the second of a series of summer evening programs to celebrate the 2008 International Year of the Reef, specialists will be on hand to share their wealth of knowledge on topics such as Hawaiʻi fish legends, fishing techniques and pono practices, and ocean legends and traditions. The presentations will begin at 6:30 p.m. and run throughout the evening. The keiki (children) will be treated to fun craft activities which will then be displayed at Hanauma Bay during July and August, or can be taken home to enjoy!

The events, titled Lei Koʻa — Exploring the Reefs that Surround our Islands, are offered free of charge and will provide both residents and visitors alike an opportunity to learn more about Hawai‘i‘s long-standing connection to the sea. The summer evening programs will take place on the fourth Saturday of each month from 6-9 p.m. from June to September. Other upcoming events include:

Saturday, August 23: Exploring Ocean through Art where local artists will exhibit their art and share their inspiration.

Saturday, September 27: Marine Protected Species of Hawaiʻi where experts will discuss protected species and ongoing conservation efforts.

All events will offer crafts and activities for the keiki in the Hanauma Bay Visitor Center.
