The Campus Center Board is pleased to announce Phase One construction of the much-anticipated Campus Center Renovation and Expansion Project.

Through a state appropriation of $1 million, the Campus Center will be undergoing a much-needed renovation for all users of the building. Phase One consists of upgrading all the restrooms at the Campus Center to improve both ventilation and lighting. Water conservation will be implemented in the flushing and plumbing systems, and fixtures will be upgraded, ensuring ADA compliance and improving energy efficiency.

UH Manoa Vice Chancellor for Students Dr. Francisco Hernandez says, "We look forward to the first phase of the development of the newly renovated Campus Center. This investment in the future UH Manoa student will reap great benefits for the students, the campus and the state of Hawaii."

"We are extremely grateful for the support we have received from the State Legislature and our Governor," says Campus Center Board President Sonny Ton. "They have been champions of this project, and we wouldn‘t have come this far without their collective vision for the university."

As a central location of the Manoa Campus and with more than 10,000 students, faculty and staff using the building daily, the Campus Center‘s Phase One renovation will also include increasing gathering spaces in the mall area, particularly for students to meet, study and socialize. This will call for a large obstruction — the forum bleachers — to be removed. Access to the Bookstore from the 2nd floor will be maintained. Construction is anticipated to begin May 21 and to end before the fall semester. The project was awarded to Designer Built Systems.

All food services, the Bookstore, the ticket windows and other services are operational during the construction. However, during the renovation, construction areas will be barricaded for safety. The restroom renovation will occur in phases, ensuring that access to restrooms at the Campus Center is available. Restrooms on the first and third floors will be renovated first.

The Campus Center was built in 1974 to give students an arena to study and socialize in a relaxing and inviting environment. Today, students, faculty and staff are able to obtain services that enhance their campus experience. The Campus Center will undergo its first major renovation and expansion since it was built almost 35 years ago through the Campus Center Renovation and Expansion Project. The renovation this summer marks the start of three phases for this project, "Making Campus Center the Center of Campus". A Campus Center Renovation and Expansion Project website with the latest news is under construction and will be available after May 5 at
