The University of Hawaiʻi announced today the opening of the search for the chief executive officer of the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa campus. Located in Honolulu, UH Manoa is the premiere research institution as well as the oldest and largest of the 10 statewide campuses in the University of Hawaiʻi system.

"The University of Hawaii at Manoa is perhaps the most ethnically and academically diverse undergraduate institution of higher education in the country. From around the world, faculty and students come to Hawaii to do cutting edge research in astronomy and marine sciences, address issues created by the advent of the global economy through study of international law and business, and enjoy life in one of the most beautiful places on earth," said Evan S. Dobelle, president of the University of Hawaii.

"There are no limits to the possibilities here: Hawaii is positioned between East and West--- not only geographically, but culturally as well. Our state's small size means that the University has an unusually large impact, as both the primary engine for the economy and the caretaker of Hawaii's unique culture. We are seeking a Chancellor with bold ideas, a vision for east-west relations, and multicultural sensitivity," said Dobelle.

"As 2001-2002 Manoa Faculty Senate Chair, I am honored to serve as chair of the Chancellor Search Committee. Fifteen committee members will serve on this committee, representing faculty, students, deans and directors, staff, alumni and community members. I am pleased that faculty is able to play an important role in the selection of the new chancellor. This search represents an unprecedented opportunity for faculty to be centrally involved in the governance of the university. We look forward to a long and productive collaborative relationship with the new administration at UH Manoa," said Joanne Cooper, chair of the UH Manoa Faculty Senate.

The chancellor will be responsible for providing executive leadership in the planning, coordination and administration of all academic and non-academic programs on campus. The Chancellor oversees the development, allocation and administration of the campus‘ budget and long-range and strategic planning activities; and directs and coordinates instructional, research and student affairs with respective campus administrators. The Chancellor reports to the President of the University of Hawaiʻi system and provides direction to deans, directors, faculty and staff to ensure optimal achievement of excellence in teaching, research and service.

The initial review of applications and nominations will begin on March 1, 2002 and will continue until the position is filled. For a complete copy of the position description and application process, go to www.hawaii.edu/news/kulama/020118/chancellor.html.
