UH Manoa Engineers Assess Damage from October 15 Quake

HONOLULU — Following the earthquakes that jolted the State of Hawaiʻi on Sunday, October 15, 2006, a team of engineers from the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa traveled to the Island of Hawaiʻi to assess the damage.

The team, consisting of Prof. Peter G. Nicholson, Ph.D., P.E., and Prof. Horst G. Brandes, Ph.D., P.E., geotechnical engineers, and Ian N. Robertson, Ph.D., S.E., a structural engineer, surveyed the areas from Kailua-Kona to Hilo throughout the northern part of the island where the greatest shaking had occurred and where the most damage had been reported.

The group concentrated their reconnaissance survey on the investigation of landslides, harbors, dams, buildings, roadways and bridges. An executive summary as well as the full report of the reconnaissance are now available for free download on the Department's web site at www.cee.hawaii.edu.

Assessment findings will be contributed to future publications for the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI). The members of the team will return to the Big Island shortly for more in depth assessments.
