PEARL CITY, OʻAHU — The University of Hawaiʻi at West Oʻahu recently received a Merit Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects-Hawaiʻi Chapter (ASLA) for its Long-Range Development Plan. The plan was developed and submitted by local landscaping and architectural firm PBR Hawaiʻi.

The ASLA awards jury noted that the project successfully addresses community concerns, a sense of history and academic needs into the planning process. The committee also commended the plan‘s effort in incorporating "sustainability" and "Smart Growth" concepts. "The plan was recognized as a well-planned Kapolei improvement and for its strong interaction between public and private development," said the ASLA in a press release.

The Long-Range Development Plan outlines UHWO‘s vision for the development of a new state-of-the-art campus 1.5 miles east of the City of Kapolei. The campus will occupy approximately 155 acres with an additional 59 acres set aside for a mixed use site that will include a university "village," affordable housing, roads and parks. Groundbreaking for the new campus is expected to take place in 2007, with a projected completion of Phase I of the campus in 2009.
