The University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa is listed in the third tier of America‘s Best Colleges 2007 as compiled by US News & World Report. That places Manoa in the top 300 of the national universities surveyed by the publication.

"The annual rankings are a useful tool as we assess the effectiveness of our academic and student life programs," said Interim Manoa Chancellor Denise Konan. "We believe that the significant changes we are currently making to improve the student experience at Manoa will begin to affect our ranking over the next few years."

"I‘m pleased to note that our faculty indicators are comparable to those of top tier universities," she added. "For example, fully 98 percent of our faculty are full time, and our student-faculty ratios are still quite favorable.

"It‘s obvious we have some work to do to improve our student retention and graduation rates. The total learning and living environment will improve with the changes we are making in student housing and expanded student academic support services," Konan said. "We are working on a campus renewal effort that will not only improve our physical environment, but also reinforce the vibrant intellectual climate that is present on any university campus."

The US News tables also list UH Manoa among the universities whose students complete college with the lowest debt. About a third of students graduating have student loan balances when they graduate, with the average indebtedness at approximately $12,500.00.

The print edition of the magazine‘s college rankings issue is scheduled to appear on newsstands on Monday, August 21, 2006.
