HONOLULU — The University of Hawaiʻi has selected Wayne Nakamura as the 2006 recipient of the President‘s Award for Excellence in Buildings and Grounds Maintenance. The award honors UH employees who exhibit dedication and sustained superior performance in a maintenance, landscaping, custodial, shop or trucking position.

Nakamura joined UH Mānoa‘s Campus Center as a utility worker in 2003. He consistently displays pride in getting repairs accomplished quickly and in improving the physical appearance of the facilities. Nakamura‘s expertise in electrical, plumbing, masonry, carpentry and other areas of general construction has resulted in saving the Campus Center about $40,000 over the last year.

To his colleagues, Nakamura is a "stand out" because of his attitude towards his profession, the enjoyment he gains from interacting with students, faculty, staff and vendors, and his willingness to go out of his way to complete a project. "Wayne takes pleasure in his work and exemplifies the meaning of ʻhaving a positive work ethic,‘ noted a colleague.

Nakamura will be recognized for his contributions to the community along with other UH award winners at a systemwide ceremony in September.
