HONOLULU — To celebrate the University of Hawaii‘s 100th anniversary in 2007, Hawaiian Telcom‘s nine 2006-2007 directories will feature nine different pieces of artwork — one on the cover of each directory — by University of Hawaii students, faculty and staff. The first to appear will be onHawaiian Telcom‘s Official Directories for Oahu in October 2006. Directories for the counties of Hawaii, Kauai and Maui will be distributed in January and February of 2007.

Hawaiian Telcom will choose cover artists for the centennial directories through art contests, one for each of Hawaii‘s four counties, which start today and end on May 15. In addition, designs will be selected for the Oahu yellow page directory, Windward, Leeward, East Honolulu and Oahu‘s new companion directory for a total of nine cover designs. The contests are open to all University of Hawaii part-time and full-time students, faculty and staff enrolled or employed at University of Hawaii campuses at any time during the spring 2006 semester. The University of Hawaii will present winners with a cash prize of $200, and Hawaiian Telcom will also present winners with anadditional $100.

The tradition of featuring work by local artists on the cover of Hawaii‘s telephone books began in 1973. Selected artists have had their work printed on more than a million telephone directories statewide every year, giving them recognition and exposure to a broad audience.

This new twist on tradition will feature art on six different directories for Oahu (White Pages Directory, Yellow Pages Directory, Leeward Directory, Windward Directory, East Oahu Directory and the new Companion Directory), and on the combined white and yellow pages directories for Hawaii County, Kauai County and Maui County. Each county‘s University of Hawaii campuses will hold a separate contest for that county‘s directory covers. Each directory will also have dedicatedpages inside featuring the artist for that directory‘s cover and providing information on the University of Hawaii‘s centennial.

"We are honored to feature aspiring local artists on our official directory covers and to celebrate the University of Hawaii‘s 100th anniversary in an appropriately creative way," said Mike Ruley, Chief Executive Officer of Hawaiian Telcom.

"We are grateful to Hawaiian Telcom for providing us this unique opportunity to commemorate our centennial while showcasing the talent of our university community," said David McClain, UH Interim President. "The winning entries featured on the various directories throughout the state will serve as a tribute to the special place in which we live, work, learn and play."
