WHAT: A retirement dinner honoring Jerris Hedges, dean of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), for his 15 years of service, dedication and leadership of the state’s only medical school. Hedges will retire on March 1, 2023.

WHO: Approximately 100 guests including JABSOM faculty, staff and students; UH, state and healthcare industry leaders; and donors attended. 

WHERE: John A. Burns School of Medicine, Cafe Waiola and Lanai

WHY: Hedges has positively impacted many students, faculty/researchers and staff during his time at JABSOM. He has also fostered relationships and partnerships with Hawaiʻi healthcare industry providers and donors.

OTHER FACTS:
 

  • Under Hedges, JABSOM contributed greatly to UH’s research success through his leadership on several multi-professional National Institutes of Health (NIH) research infrastructure grants. He will continue to help guide the NIH-sponsored Ola HAWAIʻI health disparities grant upon retirement.
     

  • Hedges led the medical school to greater national visibility, experiencing a significant rise in the US News & World Report rankings of the nation’s best medical schools.
     

  • 1,016 students have graduated from JABSOM in the 15 years Hedges served as dean.
     

  • Hedges was elected the Hawaii Medical Association Physician of the Year in 2013.
     

  • Hedges is only one of two UH employees elected to the prestigious National Academy of Medicine.
