HONOLULU — A blood drive will be held at College Hill in Mānoa on Wednesday, May 4, 8 a.m. — 1 p.m., in memory of Lorraine "Lorrie" Mortimer, wife of former University of Hawai'i President Kenneth Mortimer. Lorraine Mortimer died Friday, February 4, 2005, after a long battle with blood cancer.

"One of Mrs. Mortimer‘s wishes was for others to give blood and help those in need, including cancer patients," said Wendie McClain, wife of UH Interim President David McClain. "She did so much for the community during her years as first lady for the University, we wanted to do something that would honor her memory."

"We are so appreciative of Lorrie Mortimer‘s wish because blood donors provide an important community service and can help save up to three lives with a single donation," explained Blood Bank of Hawaiʻi President & Medical Director Robyn Yim, M.D. "It‘s a great way to make a huge difference in the lives of others in a very small amount of time."

Cancer patients are Hawaiʻi‘s largest group of blood users, receiving approximately 35 percent of the state‘s blood supply. Other typical recipients include mothers and babies during childbirth, accident and trauma victims, and patients requiring surgeries and other forms of treatment.

The donation process takes about an hour and includes some paperwork and a mini physical, but the actual collection of blood takes just five to eight minutes. After donating, College Hill blood drive participants will enjoy refreshments on the lānaʻi of the President‘s home.

Blood donors must be in good health, 18 or older (or 17 with parental consent), weigh 110 pounds, and have a valid photo I.D. For more information or to schedule an appointment to donate, please call 956-0785.
