UH Manoa offers new on-line PhD in Nursing
The program breaks new ground in nursing education to prepare teachers and researchers in the field
University of HawaiʻiThe Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) has approved the online delivery of the PhD program in Nursing, making it the first Manoa PhD program to be offered using this method of instruction. The program breaks new ground for the University as it explores alternate ways of providing quality programs and increased access to students. The PhD program prepares nurse scholars to conduct clinical scholarship and to teach in nursing education programs, especially those with minority student populations.
Hawaii currently has a shortage of RNs which is expected to quadruple in size by 2020, according to a recent report on the state of the nursing workforce. Nursing educators are the gateway to the "nursing pipeline." Yet there are too few faculty in Hawaii‘s public nursing schools to meet the increasing demand. The on-line program hopes to increase the supply of qualified nursing educators and increase the possibility for research in the nursing workforce, thereby improving the quality of nursing education and practice in Hawaii and the Pacific region.
The new program will be offered by distance learning modalities statewide and to the U.S. mainland beginning this fall. Most of the courses will be offered via the Internet (Web CT), email, list-serves, and other web-based technology. Students will participate in three to four on-campus meetings throughout the course of the program to foster learning in an academic and scholarly community. A week-long on-campus intensive meeting is required prior to the start of the first semester.
The School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene has offered an on-site PhD in Nursing since 1998. Since then 7 students have graduated and are filling leadership positions in nursing.
