April 25, 2017, 7:30 pm

Folk Songs

The UH Contemporary Music Ensemble, Thomas Osborne, director, presents a program of works inspired by folk songs and traditional instruments. Iranian-born composer Reza Vali is featured with two works on the program, both based on Persian folk songs, and guest artist Maya Hoover (mezzo-soprano) will join the ensemble on Luciano Berio’s Folk Songs, a colorful collection of folk song settings around the world.

Two UH student composers are represented on the concert, Thomas Goedecke and Ulung Tanoto, whose pieces were selected in the group’s Call for Scores. Also on the program will be music for shakuhachi and percussion by Hifumi Shimoyama and transcriptions of Balinese gamelan music by Colin McPhee.

Ticket prices are: $10 general admission, $6 seniors/students/UH faculty & staff. UHM music majors free.
