John Mount

Professor of Music


John Mount, Professor of Music at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa since 1975, is a bass-baritone educated at the University of Colorado, where he studied voice with Berton Coffin. He has been the featured bass soloist for a number of Honolulu Symphony productions including: Handel’s Messiah, Verdi’s Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. He has also led an active career on the opera stage performing over seventy-five roles with Hawai‘i Opera Theatre. In addition, Prof. Mount has performed leading roles on the mainland with the San Francisco Opera, the Santa Fe Opera, the Denver Lyric Opera, and the Houston Grand Opera. Before joining the UH faculty he won first place in the National Opera Auditions and was a national finalist in the Metropolitan Opera Auditions and the San Francisco Opera Auditions. In addition to his activities as member of the voice faculty and soloist, he serves as music director at Kailua United Methodist Church.
