The Sherwood Maynard Award, established by Dr. Sherwood Maynard, is awarded each year to the highest-performing second-year student participating in QUEST, the Quantitative Underwater Ecological Surveying Techniques field course offered through the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. Dr. Sherwood Maynard, MOP Director from 1980 – 2007, developed MOP into the program you see today. He was responsible for creating the QUEST and MAST field courses, the Graduate Ocean Policy Certificate (now through Geography), the Maritime Archaeology and History Certificate, the Maritime Archaeology Symposium, and the Blue Water Marine Lab. Dr. Maynard mentored ocean-loving students for nearly three decades, worked as a tireless advocate for MOP, and embodied the values of the Marine Option Program — passion for the ocean, enthusiasm for teaching, and stewardship of the marine environment.
