Recently, the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research called for proposals under the heading of a Strategic Investment Initiative. Eight of the 20-some proposals were funded, after what the OVCAA called “a highly competitive campus-wide competition.” The University refers to these “multi-disciplinary projects … as extraordinary in their potential to advance knowledge and understanding, and in their responsiveness to the challenges and opportunities afforded to us by our home, Hawaiʻi”.
Besides the Multilingual Multicultural Strategic Initiative, the other seven are as follows:
Engaging Sustainability and Resilience of Island Ecosystems, Stewardship and Indigenous Sciences: Enhancing Student, Faculty and Community Capacity
Kūʻokoʻa: Sustaining Abundant ʻĀina & Resilient Leadership
Microbiomes of Hawaiian ahupuaʻa (ridge-to-reef) watersheds: Data acquisition and mathematical analysis to discover the basis of sustainability across vital Hawaiian landscapes
Pīkoʻokoʻo Initiative
Strategic Monitoring And Resilience Training in the Ala Wai Watershed – SMART Ala Wai
Symphony of the Hawaiian Birds
