Hawai‘i Language Roadmap Initiative

The Hawai’i Language Roadmap Initiative (Roadmap), housed in the UH-Mānoa College of Languages, Linguistics and Literature, is tasked with implementing a road map for change —in education, in business, in state and county government, and in the community— to help build the future multilingual workforce of Hawai‘i.  Launched in September 2013, the Roadmap identifies Hawai’i’s multilingual, multicultural population as a key source of social and economic strength for the state.  A multilingual workforce ensures equitable access to state and county services, enhances economic development for the state, and increases opportunities for effective communication and mutual engagement both among Hawai’i residents and visitors to the state. The Roadmap’s focus on increasing multilingual educational and training endeavors in Hawai’i to build a robust multilingual workforce aligns with a number of the projects and research endeavors of the MLMC Strategic Initiative.
