In order to clear the Health Insurance hold, both J-1 and F-1 visa-holders must provide proof that they posses health insurance that is valid in the U.S. for the entire duration of the student’s period of study, and that meets or exceeds established minimum standards of coverage.

You are a J-1 student if you received a DS-2019 form to apply for your visa; you are an F-1 student if you received an I-20 form.

J-1 students: Provide proof of your health insurance to the International Student Services Office (ISS). For an overview of health insurance in the U.S. and to see several pre-screened insurance plan options, please read the J-1 Health Insurance FAQ Sheet. As part of your Visa Clearance with the ISS Office upon arrival to UHM, you must submit proof of your health insurance in order to have the health insurance hold removed. Questions? Contact ISS at issmanoa@hawaii.edu.

F-1 students: Provide proof of your health insurance to the Student Health Insurance Office (SHIO). For an overview of health insurance in the U.S. and to see the options that you have for health insurance, please read the F-1 Health Insurance FAQ Sheet. Upon arrival to UHM, you must submit proof of health insurance to SHIO in Queen Liliuo’kalani Center (QLC) for Student Services Room 313-D to have your health insurance hold removed. Questions?
