Studying Language Abroad
Alwine and Jesse Doyle European Language Endowed Travel Grant
The Alwine & Jesse Doyle European Language Study Abroad Scholarships support University of Hawai'i at Mānoa students who want to earn credits in one of the languages taught in the Department of Languages & Literatures of Europe & the Americas (French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish) at an accredited university in Europe. Students who propose to study at a European university where no UHM program exists, should meet with the advisor or division head for that language before applying. Preference will be given to students studying at the 200-level or above. Preference for graduate awards will be given to LLEA students.
Recent awards have varied from $750 to $1500

For spring: October 15 (approx)
Eligibility
- Applicant must have a 3.0 GPA in the language to be studied
- Applicant must have an overall 3.0 GPA
- Applicant must be a full-time undergraduate or classified graduate student in good standing
Fill out the online application form (which will require you to upload a copy of your STAR transcripts at the end).
Additionally, applicants must request two letters of recommendation from faculty who teach at UH Mānoa. Faculty must send the letters directly to the Doyle Selection Committee at llea464@hawaii.edu

It is strongly recommended that all Spanish language students study overseas for a summer or semester in a UHM Spanish program. Students taking Spanish 201 and Spanish 202 may complete their H/SL requirement abroad. Spanish Minor students and LLEA BA in Spanish & Latin American Studies Majors (LLEA BA/SLST) are strongly encouraged as well to apply to earn 6 credits of advanced Spanish (300+) overseas.

Students in the Russian Program have opportunities to deepen their linguistic proficiency, expand cultural knowledge, and gain first-hand experience through accredited study abroad and intensive language programs focused on Russian language and Russian-speaking regions. Opportunities may include summer, semester, academic-year, and online programs in countries of the former Soviet Union and other approved sites offering immersive Russian language training.
As a critical needs language identified by the U.S. government, Russian prepares students for careers in international relations, diplomacy, security studies, business, education, translation, research, and work across the Asia-Pacific region. At UH Mānoa, Russian occupies a unique place within Pacific and Asian studies, encouraging students to approach Russia not only as a European nation, but also as an important Asia-Pacific actor.
Students pursuing Russian language and culture, Russian area studies, or interdisciplinary research may also be eligible for travel and study support through the Frederick J. and Ella Lury Wiswell Scholarship Fund.
The Russian Program encourages students to discuss study abroad planning early so that overseas coursework, intensive language training, and research experiences can be integrated into the Russian Language and Culture Certificate and related degree programs.
