Mira Baciu-Simian Scholarship

Mira Baciu-Simian Scholarship Annually, a scholarship or scholarships will be awarded to support research or study in France in the field of French literature and culture. Preference will be given to those candidates wishing to study or research the Rumanian influence on European literature and culture and who have not previously studied abroad.

Candidates must be a graduate or undergraduate student enrolled in a degree program at the Univ. of Hawaii, demonstrate sufficient language proficiency to pursue study or research in France. Financial need will be a consideration. Candidates will submit along with the application for the award a statement of personal educational objectives and a detailed plan of study or project of research. A report of activities and accomplishments will be required at the end of the term of the scholarship. Applications will be received until 15 March. Awards will be announced by the end of the fall semester. In the event that the committee decides that no suitable candidates have made applications in any year, no award will be made and the monies which would have been used for that purpose will be returned to the principal funds.

Anita Hecht Scholarship

Anita Hecht Scholarship Annually, depending upon funds available, a scholarship or scholarships will be awarded to support a semester of study in France. Preference will be given to French majors who have not previously studied in France. Candidates must be an undergraduate student enrolled in a degree program at the University of Hawaii and demonstrate sufficient language proficiency to pursue a full semester of study. The award will be made on the basis of academic achievement and potential. Financial need will be a consideration. Normally the stipend is not sufficient to cover all expenses, so the student must have other sources of support. Along with the application, candidates will submit a statement of personal educational objectives. It is expected that scholarship winners will submit a report of activities and accomplishments upon return from the semester in France. Applications will be received until 15 March. Awards will be announced by the end of the fall semester. In the event that the committee decides that no suitable candidate has made application in any year, no award will be made and the monies will remain in the Anita Hecht Fund.

Betsy Tan Scholarship

Applicants must be enrolled full-time in second year or above of French study at UHM. Candidates must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or better and demonstrate strong desire to continue study of French beyond study abroad. Financial need will be a consideration. Preference will be given to graduates of UH Lab School or former students of Betsy Tan. Applications will be received until 15 March. Awards will be announced by the end of the fall semester. In the event that the committee decides that no suitable candidates have made applications in any year, no award will be made and the monies which would have been used for that purpose will be returned to the principal funds.
