Le Daguerréotype au croisement d’un protestantisme iconoclaste et d’un catholicisme iconophile. Bulletin du Centre de recherche français à Jérusalem (CRFJ). Le Bulletin du CRFJ est une publication annuelle qui vise à faire connaître les recherches et les activités du Centre de recherche français à Jérusalem. Le CRFJ est placé sous la double tutelle du ministère des Affaires étrangères et européennes et du CNRS. Il est intégré au réseau des Instituts de recherche français à l’étranger (IFRE) animé par le MAEE ; et il constitue une unité de recherche du CNRS (USR 3132). Cet article a été soumis au comité de lecture de ce bulletin.

Article critique

Chateaubriand: Correspondance Générale VIII 1828-1830. J’ai eu l’immense plaisir de faire la critique de ce volume de 658 pages annoté par Pierre Riberette et Agnès Kettler et publié par les Éditions Gallimard en 2010. Mon article a été publié en juillet 2012 (Volume 107, 3, pages 945-6) dans la Modern Language Review (MLR).

 

Thèses

J’ai eu l’honneur d’être membre du comité de soutenance de thèse de doctorat en anglais de Julian Bukalski, étudiant qui a avait obtenu la maîtrise de français Cum Laude, il y a quelques années.

J’ai dirigé la brillante thèse du Honors Program d’une de nos spécialistes de français, Carrie Downing Larick. Carrie a obtenu sa licence avec Honors en 2012.

Je continue à faire la revue des articles en italien et en français portant sur la biographie et l’autobiographie sur des auteurs comme Chateaubriand, Sand, Balzac, Stendhal, Baudelaire, Gautier, Constant, Voltaire, Rabelais, dans le magazine littéraire Studi Francesi qui parait régulièrement. Colloque

Au printemps, j’ai présenté mon article intitulé La «dérobade» autobiographique et le roman à clefs féminin après 1850 pour le colloque organisé par Andrea Del Lungo et Brigitte Louichon sur La Littérature en bas-bleus. Romancières sous la Restauration et la Monarchie de Juillet, du 11 au 13 mai, 2011. Ma communication porte sur les romans à clefs de Daniel Stern (Marie d’Agoult), Nélida, Sand, Elle et lui, et Olga de Janina, Souvenirs d’une Cosaque, l’analyse au vitriol qu’en fait Barbey d’Aurevilly dans Les Bas-Bleus et la réponse « coup de cravache » à Barbey que Janina introduit dans la treizième édition de son roman.

Last projects

Sand au jour le jour is a biographical & chronological essay concentrating on Sand and her relationship with Musset, Chateaubriand, Balzac, Stendhal, Flaubert, Baudelaire, Zola and a few others…

Quel tas de blagues is a reflection on literature and on the teaching of literature. It starts with a reflexion on Rodolphe’s comment while he writes to Emma Bovary, continues with the modernity of Balzac in his novel, Les Employés, and ends on considerations concerning the teaching of literature hic et nunc.

Crisolenguas provides a forum for scholars who work on literature, culture, language, linguistics, and film topics in French, Italian, German, and Portuguese, including topics in Classical Languages Latin and Greek. Crisolenguas is designed to disseminate and share the research of scholars with other scholars in the Caribbean and beyond.

The French Review is a national refereed literary journal indexed in the MLA. It was founded in 1927 and it has the largest circulation of any scholarly journal of French studies in the world; its yearly circulation is 10,500.

John Kekela’s Correspondence (Sept. 18, 1853- Aug.11, 1879). 383 pages. Solicited translation into French of the correspondence written by Kekela, a Hawaiian missionary sent to the Marquises Islands. This translation was sponsored by the Andover Foundation of Archeological Research for a publication by the Société des Études Océaniennes or Haere Po No Tahiti Press.

Mānoa is a “unique, award-winning Pacific literary journal of international writing that includes American and international fiction, poetry, artwork, and essays of current cultural and literary interest”.

Touchée par la déconstruction, Lettres françaises (October 2004). Lettres françaises is a monthly supplement of the notorious French newspaper, L’Humanité. This issue of Lettres françaises came out immediately following Jacques Derrida’s death. Invited writers were Cixous, Malabou, Steigler, Nancy, Adami, Bénézet, Berkman, Bourcier, Burattoni, Chaslin, Pignon-Ernest, Raynaud, Ristat, Vachez, and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak (who solicited my translation of her article on Derrida). Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak is a Professor of Cultural Studies at Columbia University (NY), a leading figure in Cultural Studies Criticism, and the English translator of Jacques Derrida’s De la Grammatologie. Spivak is “canonized” in the Norton Anthology of Literary Criticism.
