Back Credits information

Please submit completed Petition for Back Credits Form, Application for Certificate in European Languages, Application for Certificate in LAIS, and Credit by Exam forms via email to llea464@hawaii.edu.

Petition for Back Credits:

All students (including native speakers of a language) with experience in another language other than English may earn “back credits.” These students may take any UHM course, appropriate to their level, in which there is significant use of that language. (Appropriate level determined by placement exam or adviser; significant use determined by the course content.) Upon completion of this course* with a letter grade of C (not C-) or better, the student may petition between 3-16 back credits. For more information, please view the Policies for Back Credits.

*Only first instance of a course.

Petition for Back Credits Form (for students taking a language within the Department of LLEA, please complete online, initial, sign, date and email the form as an attachment to llea464@hawaii.edu.)

For questions regarding back credits in Chinese, Korean or Japanese, please email the Department of East Asian Languages and Literature at ealladv@hawaii.edu.

For questions regarding back credits in Filipino, Vietnamese or other Indo Pacific Languages, please contact the Department of Indo Pacific Languages at hip@hawaii.edu.

Declaration of Major:  If you want to declare, change or add a second major within the College of Arts and Sciences, please fill out this form.

Multiple Undergraduate Majors and/or Degrees: for students the College of Arts & Humanities and Languages, Linguistics, and Literature. Fill out form and take to language adviser (see specific language for adviser).

Goldenrod:  Please see your language adviser.

Verification of Certificate or Minor: If you are in the College and Languages, Linguistics, and Literature or Arts & Humanities, and are pursuing a Certificate in French, German, Russian, Spanish or LAIS, please fill out this form.  This form goes back to the Advising Center for the College of Arts & Humanities and Languages, Linguistics, and Literature, advisewd@hawaii.edu.

Certificate in European Languages:  Please fill out this form if you wish to pursue a Certificate in French, German, Russian or Spanish, please fill out this form.  Please send the form via email to: llea464@hawaii.edu

Certificate in LAIS:  Please fill out this form if you wish to pursue a Certificate in LAIS.  This form goes to Moore 488 or Moore 464. [LAIS certificate.pdf]

Credit by Examination form:  If you are a classified continuing student, you may fill out this form and possibly get credit by taking an exam. [Credit by Exam form.pdf]
