This fall, the German Film Series screens films in conjunction with LLEA 338 / History of German Cinema (offered in English).

Wed. Nov. 6 – Germany, Pale Mother (1980) – Dir. Helma Sanders-Brahms – 123 mins.

Directed by New German Cinema director Helma Sanders-Brahms.

Set in fascist era Germany in 1939, Hans and Lene marry the day before the war breaks out. Hans is sent to the Eastern front. During a bombing raid their daughter Anna is born. The house is destroyed and Lene and Anna moves in with relatives in Berlin. Hans survives the war but he is not the same person when he returns.
