2019 HONOLULU KABUKI English Website
Special Kabuki performances will be held in Honolulu in March 2019 commemorating the name succession of Nakamura Shikan and his sons Hashinosuke, Fukunosuke and Utanosuke.
The event will be part of the ‘Commemorative Project for the 150th anniversary of Japanese Emigration to Hawaii’, recalling the first official arrival of Japanese emigrants to Hawaii in 1868. Shochiku previously sent Kabuki productions to Hawaii in 1964 and 1967, this will be the first time returning to the state in 52 years.
The program consists of Renjishi (The Father and Son Shishi Lions), one of the most popular dances in the Kabuki repertoire, and a lecture entitled “Watching kabuki through sound – playing kuromisu music” by Tobaya San’emon, head of the Nagauta music ensemble.
The Nakamura family has expressed its delight in taking part in the Hawai’i performances in this milestone year. Shikan noted that Renjishi in particular is “a work that transmits Kabuki’s unique character and will offer audiences a deeply felt portrait of Japan.”
San’emon, who is also head of the executive committee of “2019 Honolulu Kabuki,” said, “These performances will be a memorial to those who emigrated to Hawai’i in 1868 and continued to pass on the Japanese spirit.”
