The UHM Department of Theatre + Dance is proud to announce that highly-acclaimed Educator, Director and Author Libby Appel, Artistic Director Emeritus of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, will be in residence August 22-27, 2016.

Appel will lead a workshop, Text Work for Actors and Directors, August 22-26, 2016 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. each afternoon, which is free and open to the public at UHM’s Kennedy Theatre. Participants are encouraged to attend all five sessions.

There will be a free Question & Answer event on Saturday, August 27, 2016, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. which will be an opportunity for participants to ask questions about Appel’s experience during her twelve seasons as Artistic Director of Oregon Shakespeare Festival, her experience with Shakespeare’s works, and her life in theatre as director, artistic director, collaborator, educator, and visionary. Advance registration for the five workshops and the Q&A is recommended, not required, although space is limited. Both programs will take place at UHM’s Kennedy Theatre. To register, email: stacyray@hawaii.edu.

Appel is the recipient of three honorary doctorates and has been honored with the Kennedy Center’s Stephen and Christine Schwarzman Legacy Award for Excellence in Theatre for “lifetime achievement in theatre and unparalleled commitment to the future of the art form through teaching.” In addition to her 20 years of directing for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Ms. Appel continues to work in major theatres across the nation: The Guthrie Theater, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, South Coast Repertory, PlayMakers Repertory Company, Arizona Theatre Company, Alliance Theatre Company, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, New Mexico Repertory, The Goodman Theatre, Court Theatre, Syracuse Stage, Intiman Theatre, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, San Jose Repertory Theatre, Utah Shakespearean Festival, and the Alabama, Colorado and Kern Shakespeare Festivals.

During her UHM residency, Appel will also be guest teaching UHM theatre classes: “Shakespeare,” “Topics in European Theatre: Chekhov,” and “Advanced Topics in Theatre Directing.” UHM’s Department of Theatre + Dance is fortunate to be able to share Appel’s knowledge and experience with UH students and the theatre community.

This residency is made possible in part with support from the Glenn Cannon Memorial Endowment Fund and the Roger A. Long Western Theatre Endowment Fund.
