LECTURES AND WORKSHOPS:

TUESDAY March 14 :

9AM – 10:15AM
Lecture: I/digi-I? Reading the ‘digital double’: new aesthetics and technoculture in contemporary/Bharatanatyam choreographies with Dr. Suparna Banerjee

Drawing on contemporary/Bharatanatyam practice, this lecture will discuss how new dance aesthetics are reconfigured through digitisation of the body. I argue that the digital double is seen not merely as an aesthetic tool or psychological state of mind, but as a methodology broadly associated with the politics of the body, identity, history, new aesthetics and technoculture.

THURSDAY March 16:

9AM – 10:15AM
Lecture: Indian Dance Forms and Films with Dr. Angana Jhaveri

This presentation is an introduction to some of the best known Indian Classical Dance forms through films made in India and includes a comparison of dance documentaries on Bharata Natyam made by established film makers. Excerpts of some of Jhaveri’s films on Indian Heritage will be screened.

2PM – 3:15PM
Lecture: Raslila: a cosmic dance, a temple ceremony, a theatre arts dissertation with Dr. Angana Jhaveri
A personal, experiential journey.

3:15PM – 4:30PM
Lecture: Choreographing/researching heterotopia: (dis/re)located places and lived temporalities with Dr. Suparna Banerjee
Contemporary Bharatanatyam practitioners in Britain have utilized disparate city places and objects, either physically or through digital technology to create new spatio-temporal aesthetics. This lecture will discuss Michel Foucault’s conceptualization of ‘heterotopia’ and examine how relationships among these fleeting places in contemporary dances fit in with his conceptualization.
