2025-26 Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Recipient, Joseph Iseri

Iseri’s dissertation examines literacy socialization in middle-class Japanese families, documenting how the process of learning to read and write are wrapped up in culturally mediated beliefs surrounding child development, morality, and interpersonal relationships. With the support of this scholarship, Iseri hopes to extend cross-cultural dialogue on educational policy surrounding early childhood literacy and highlight how culture influences literacy socialization.
