UH Mānoa International Exchange (MIX) is one of the many ways the University demonstrates its commitment to international education and understanding. Various academic units on the UHM campus, with the assistance of the International Exchange Coordinator, maintain and support international agreements with universities around the world. (See Partner University Agreements.)

MIX provides an opportunity for UHM undergraduate and graduate students to study overseas and also allows students from overseas universities to study at UHM. Exchange study may be for one or two semesters.

Outbound exchange students register as full-time students at UHM, pay their normal tuition and do not pay tuition at the host university overseas. They are, however, responsible for travel costs, flight arrangements, housing, meals, and all other living expenses.

Inbound exchange students fall into one of three categories:

  1. Exchange agreement students who pay tuition at their home university and do not pay tuition or an application fee at UHM,
  2. Hoakipa Scholarship students who pay nonresident tuition and an application at UHM but receive a 15% tuition scholarship, or
  3. Students from universities that do not have an agreement/formal partnership with UHM.

(Read more on inbound exchanges.)

A student exchange agreement with an overseas university can be proposed by any of the academic units on the UHM campus. Exchange agreements are always based on reciprocity, so the UHM academic unit must confirm that UHM students are willing to go abroad and that these students will benefit from the exchange.

MIX prides itself on the opportunities it provides UHM students to go abroad and experience other cultures in a safe and supportive environment, and the opportunities it provides international students to immerse themselves in the cultural and academic community of the campus and of Hawai'i. In short, UH Mānoa offers a place and a time where students can truly "mix" in every sense of the word. Students going to other countries or coming to Hawai'i are vital to the diversity that Mānoa offers. Our campus and global community are strengthened by the experiences, ideas, friendships and networks formed by our exchange students.
