Manoa International Education Week 2019 Photo Contest

UH Mānoa students are invited to submit your photos for the 2019 Mānoa International Education Week Photo Contest!  The goal of the contest is to showcase students’ international education experiences through UH Mānoa.  The winner of EACH category will receive a $100 prize! You can enter multiple categories and win more than once!

Winners will be announced at the International Education Week Celebration on Tuesday, November 19 at Campus Center Courtyard from 11:30am-2pm.

GUIDELINES

There are three categories for the contest.  Photos should showcase an international experience that you have had through UH Mānoa.  The photos should represent what an “international experience” means to you!  The photos do NOT need to be taken outside of the United States and includes Hawaii.  Include a brief description of the photo and its relation to international education offerings at/through UH Mānoa.

Up to one submission per category will be accepted for each student. If students participate in each category, a maximum of three photos can be submitted. You must fill out the contest Submission Form for each photo submitted. If your submission is incomplete, your photo will not be judged in the contest.

CATEGORIES

  1. PEOPLE & PORTRAITS
    • Photos of people you encountered that provided an international experience.  Must receive consent from individuals in the photos.
  2. LANDSCAPES
    • Photos of places with international or cultural significance to you.
  3. GLOBAL CLASSROOM
    • Photos of an international learning experience, whether it is inside or outside of the classroom.

Examples are, but not limited to:

  • Study abroad experience
  • In-class project or activity
  • On-campus cultural event
  • Interactions with students from another culture

EVALUATION CRITERIA

Photos and descriptions will be judged according to the following criteria:

  • Quality of Photo (including but not limited to focus, lighting, clarity)
  • Relation to UH Mānoa offerings
  • Significance to international education
  • Appropriateness to category

ELIGIBILITY

  • Must submit photo and description through the MIEW 2019 Photo Contest Submission Form by October 31, 2019 at 5:00pm HST.
  • Must be a current UH Mānoa student (Medical, Law, Outreach College & HELP students included) during the UH Fall 2019 semester.
  • Winners must have a valid UH Mānoa ID card or picture ID matching submission information.

Additional Contest Rules and Guidelines

  Ownership and Quality:
  • Photos must be:
    • An original work taken and owned by the contest participant
    • Submitted digitally only though the submission form
    • .JPEG/.JPG or .PNG format
    • 300DPI or higher
    • 100mb (megabytes) or less
  • Photos may NOT be altered in the following ways: adding, removing, rearranging, inversing, or distorting or removing subjects and/or objects from the image. Composite imagery is not acceptable. Watermarks are not acceptable.
  • Minor adjustments to color are acceptable including conversion to grayscale, minor burning, dodging, contrast, and/or color correction. Significant changes in color or hue are not acceptable.
  • Minor cropping is acceptable. Panoramic images are acceptable.
  Content:
  • Photos and descriptions should be appropriate for public viewing and abide by UH Mānoa’s code of conduct.
  • Photos and descriptions should be respectful of the host countries and cultures they represent as applicable.
  • Photos and descriptions should NOT include inappropriate subject matter, such as drinking, swearing, nudity or any unlawful behavior.
  • MIEW will not be responsible for any of the following actions done by contest participants, and will reserve the rights to take necessary legal actions:
    • Photos cover content that is: unlawful; threatening; harmful; abusive; pornographic or includes nudity; offensive; harassing; excessively violent; tortious; defamatory; false or misleading; obscene; vulgar; libelous; hateful; or discriminatory.
  • Violate the rights of others
  • Harass or harm another person.
  • Exploit or endanger a minor.
  • Impersonate any person or entity.
  • Post an image of another person without that person’s consent.
  • Post an image that belongs to a third-party, infringes upon the trademark, copyright, moral rights, intellectual rights, or rights of privacy of any entity or person.
  • The 2019 MIEW committee reserves the right to disqualify any submissions deemed in violation of the above rules at their sole discretion. Participants who are disqualified will be ineligible for prizes.
  Submission & Media Release:
  1. The photos must be relevant to the participants' understanding, experience, and participation of the international education offered by UH Mānoa.
  2. Participants agree that all submissions including the photo, description, and student information provided on the submission form may be used by MIEW committee on the MIEW website, on social media, in print, and in any relevant future programming in perpetuity. Participants are not entitled to receive any form of payment or compensation from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa for use of their photo submissions.
  *CONDITIONS OF ACCEPTANCE OF PRIZE
  1. Winners will be notified through the email provided on the submission form.
  2. Information related to the winners’ tax status will be required to collect winnings. Winners will be informed of any documentation needed to claim prize and are responsible for completing the documentation in a timely manner.
  3. Prize may be subject to IRS tax reporting.
  4. Winners will be solely responsible for all local, state, and federal taxes, as well as license and registration fees incurred by participating in the contest, including, but not limited to, transportation costs, gratuities and other items of an incidental nature.
  5. Each winner agrees to the use of their name and likeness in publicity without any additional compensation, except where prohibited by law. By entering this contest, each winner acknowledges that the MIEW 2019 committee and all sponsors and venues, have the right to publicize and broadcast each winner's name, likeness, the fact that he or she won, and all matters incidental thereto.

Limitation on Liability. By entering this content, each entrant forever discharges and releases Sponsors, their parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, and their respective directors, officers, employees, and agents from any and all liability, claims, causes of action, suits, and demands of any kind arising from or in connection with the contest, including, without limitation, responsibility for property damage, loss of life, or personal injury resulting from or in connection with participating in the contest or from or in connection with use or receipt of the prize(s), however caused.

Sponsor's Reservation of Rights. These official rules are subject to modification by the 2019 MIEW committee. In the event of a dispute, all decisions made by the 2019 MIEW committee are final and binding. Sponsors reserve the right, in their sole discretion, to disqualify any person who tampers with the entry process or the operation of Sponsor's web site, or who otherwise acts in violation of these official rules. Sponsors further reserve the right, in their sole discretion, to cancel, terminate, or modify this contest if, for any reason, the contest is not capable of completion as planned, including due to infection by computer virus, technical corruption, force majeure, or non-authorized human intervention that compromises or affects the administration, fairness, integrity, security, or proper conduct of the contest.
