The Department of Intramural Sports has long been an integral part of Manoa campus life. Located in the Lower Campus, Intramural Sports offers a wide variety of recreational activities for the university community. Students, faculty and staff can take part in these activities in various athletic venues - play basketball, volleyball, badminton or tennis; run on the track; or swim in the pool. For those with the competitive spirit, you can test your skills in our team and individual sports leagues. In addition, cardiovascular and strength equipment are available at the state-of-the-art fitness complex, the University Fitness Center. Intramural Sports also maintains an equipment check-out service for those students wanting to borrow basketballs, volleyballs, tennis rackets, and various other basic sports equipment. The 2009 Fall Intramural Basketball Season is back and looks to be better than ever. The defending champions in the over 5'10" division is back and with a purpose. Lay Da Pipe returned their key players in JD, Drew, and Scott and look everybit as the champion. With only JD dressed for the game (the other 2 had prior commitments), he led his team with 14 pts over a game Team Green. Lay Da Pipe went on to win 45-30. Without the Blazers (2008 runner-ups) back to contend for the title, several teams look to reach the top. UNLIMITED has talented pg Jason as well as a versatile power forward in Zach, and a small forward in Joe ready to push for a title. Perennial powerhouse Da Bus Drivahs are back and with a vengeance. The back-to-back champion missed a 3-peat last year when they lost in the semi-finals but appear to be making a lot of noise. A new face in Donnie and returning forward, Chris lead Da Bus Drivahs over Kappa Sigma in a overwhelming 78-12 win. When asked about their team play, the point guard of the team humbly replied, "we just wanted to make a statement, that no one forgot about us." Well, that's an excellent way of saying, "we're back". And I think they just might be. Still the season is long and let's see if all the winners in Week 1 can keep up the momentum for Week 2. In the under division, The Birdmen will not be back to defend their title, so look for a new champion to be crowned from the under division. Teams like Money Shot, Far East Movement, and 2nd to None, appear poised to break out of the gates with convincing wins. Each team neared or broke the 50 pt game barrier. In the wahine division, look for defending champions (with a new name) You Would try a 3-peat for the title. But stiff competition in Maui Built and Shots! Shots! Shots!, look ready and able to possibly and finally, dethrone the back-to-back champs. A couple of Chelseas led You Would and Shots! with game highs of 14 a piece, respectively. This looks to be a great season of Intramural Wahine Basketball. For more scores, click on the link below: |
