First Annual Native Hawaiian Student Services (NHSS) LHRC Student Conference

September 22-23, 2017
Times & Location: UH Mānoa Campus (specifics to be announced)

Growing Hawaiian leaders,
Strengthening Hawaiian research,
Empowering the Lāhui.

Native Hawaiian Student Services (NHSS) is excited to host the first annual Lāhui Hawaiʻi Research Center (LHRC) Student Conference, held at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. The departmentʻs aim is to bring together our brilliant haumāna kanaka ʻōiwi, kumu, and the community to highlight and discuss some of the many exciting and relevant research projects, across a wide variety of fields, that kanaka ʻōiwi have taken up in service of their lāhui.

This year’s conference has a central theme that asks, “how is our work in service of EA?”

Presenters at the conference will come from NHSS programs, internships, by application, and by invitation. One goal of the conference will be to provide guidance, training, and mentorship to our haumāna kanaka ʻōiwi so that they are better equipped, more confident, and better prepared for careers in research and their respective discipline.

Another goal is to support, highlight, and elevate lāhui Hawaiʻi research and scholarship, in order to push the university to fulfill its mission of being a Hawaiian place of learning.

LHRC is committed to making this academic experience approachable and beneficial to our undergraduate and graduate haumāna and, in the weeks leading up to the conference, will be offering all participants a series of training and confidence building workshops to support them in their engagement with this academic arena. We are also inviting faculty from all disciplines to encourage and mentor their students for this conference.
