Ke Welina Mai Kākou!

Welcome to the Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

Thank you for your interest in our program. You are about to embark on an amazing journey learning about our Native Hawaiian culture. We offer a Bachelorʻs degree with a concentration in five areas encompassing the breadth of Hawaiian knowledge and experience from politics and history (Kūkulu Aupuni), to literature (Mo‘ōlelo ‘ōiwi), visual arts and music (Hālau o Laka), natural resource management (Mālama ‘Āina), and Hawaiiʻs relationship with the rest of Polynesia (Kumu Kahiki). A list of the courses we offer and their descriptions can be found here.

Quite frequently, I have seen excitement and passion in  students’ eyes and many times a calmness and serenity about them as they attempt to explain to me that they finally found the place where they were meant to be—Kamakakūokalani. I am sure you will experience feelings quite similar to theirs as you proceed along your academic journey with us.

Please review our requirements and contact me should you have any questions or would like to declare your major in Hawaiian Studies.

Our graduates have found employment in a wide variety of sectors in the community.  In addition, they have gone on to seek advanced degrees in Anthropology, Art, Botany, Business, Communications, Counseling, Education, Engineering, English, Geography, Law, Linguistics, Medicine, Music, Ocean Science, Pacific Islands Studies, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, Theater, Urban and Regional Planning, and Hawaiian Studies.  Contrary to what many believe, a degree in Hawaiian Studies opens up your options for the future.  The possibilities are truly endless.
