About

R. Keao NeSmith’s teaching focus is on Hawaiian and Tahitian language, particularly language teaching theory and methodology and teacher training in language teaching with an emphasis on communicative approaches to language teaching and learning that involve using the target language. The methodology involves having students engage with each other in performing tasks using the target language. He is a co-founder of a public charter school on Kaua‘i that primarily serves Ni‘ihau families living on the west side of Kaua‘i. He is also a member of a community-based organization that maintains and conducts research on cultural sites in Nāpali, Kaua‘i. At UH Mānoa, he is a member of the Hawaiian Society of Law and Politics, an organization consisting of graduate students interested in political and legal issues related to the Hawaiian Kingdom.
