About

Dr Keao NeSmith is an Instructor of Hawaiian and has also taught Tahitian language previously at UH Mānoa. Dr NeSmith has a PhD in language teaching theory and practice with a focus on language teacher and learner cognition. His teaching approach is based on Communicative Language Teaching, a highly interactive teaching approach involving lots of student interaction in the target language working towards productive outcomes. Dr NeSmith works to expand the range of books available for pleasure reading in Hawaiian, with recent translations of titles, such as Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found there, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince), J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, as well as versions of traditional Hawaiian stories. He is actively involved in cultural site research and restoration projects all around Kaua’i, working with various non-profit organizations on the island engaged in such work. At UH Mānoa, he is a member of the Hawaiian Society of Law and Politics, an organization of scholars who work to educate the public on the continuity of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
