About

Born on the island of Lanaʻi, on September 4, 1940, and the eldest of seven children to Robert Kauila and Kamali Evangeline Goodness-Kauila.  Raised on the islands of Lanaʻi, Maui and Oʻahu, Pualani Kauila graduated from Kaimuki High School in 1958.  She left Hawai’i in September of 1959 to attend California Airline & Electronic School.  While living in California Pualani worked for the Airlines in sales promotion, she married and had 3 children of which one is now deceased.  She had four grandchildren and returned home in 1984.  Pualani worked in the travel industry including being the first kumu hired for the S. S. Constitution and Independence.  Upon leaving the ships, she went back to school and in 2000 got her AA degree from Windward Community College, her BA degree in Hawaiian Studies in 2002, and her MA degree in Pacific Islands Studies in 2005.  Pualani has worked in the administration office at Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies, in the Library, and was a graduate research assistant and graduate teaching assistant until she graduated with her MA.
