Kauhale (Native Hawaiian Student Services)

The essential function of the Kauhale (Native Hawaiian Student Services) is to support and foster the successful matriculation of Native Hawaiians at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. As part of the Hawai‘inuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, the Kauhale has two kuleana:

  • To serve Hawai‘inuiākea undergraduate and graduate majors (Hawaiian language & Hawaiian Studies)
  • To serve all Native Hawaiian students at University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
  • The Kauhale provides:

  • Information and guidance to students and families about opportunities in higher education
  • Support, direction, and guidance to students who are interested in majoring in Hawaiian language and/or Hawaiian Studies as well as Native Hawaiian students and their families
  • Encouragement and support for haumāna to engage in diverse disciplines fostering Native Hawaiian representation in different professions
  • Spaces, activities, and programs that allow students to explore, discuss, and reinforce Hawaiian identity
  • Leadership opportunities for haumāna to serve our lāhui
  • Integrated learning experiences that link classroom learning and community engagement
  • Ongoing research on Native Hawaiians participation in higher education
