Ishi Sakurai Scholarship

Ms. Yoshiko Sakurai (B.A., History, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Class of 1969), has endowed the Ishi Sakurai Scholarship in honor of her mother. The History Department at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa offers the annual Ishi Sakurai Scholarship for one (1) undergraduate History major with a concentration in Asian History. This may be increased to two (2) undergraduate History majors, funds permitting, and at the Department’s discretion.

Scholarship Benefits (last year’s award, subject to change):

  • Up to $2,150 per semester (starting from $500 and upward, pending availability)
  • Up to $4,300 per year (Fall and Spring semesters)
  • Renewable for a second year (Fall and Spring) upon submission of a written request in January of the first year of the award and if qualifications are met, and pending availability of sufficient funds

Qualifications:

  • Full-time undergraduate student (carrying 12 or more credits)
  • Have at least 48 earned credits by the effective date of the scholarship
  • Overall GPA of 3.0
  • Declared History major who either:
    • is currently enrolled in, or has previously taken, at least two (2) History Department classes focusing on Asia at the 200-level or higher at the time of application, OR
    • has a concentration in Asian History (this may be applicable to students who became History majors prior to Fall 2020)

How to Apply:

The deadline each year is March 5. Visit the UH Mānoa STAR Student Scholarships website to submit the application materials listed below:

  • Academic transcript (Star transcripts are acceptable)
  • Brief statement (maximum one typed page) of applicant’s interest in Asian History and the need for the scholarship
  • One current letter of recommendation reflecting applicant’s performance in History classes
