Early Learning and Vocabulary

Researchers in Michigan have found that an emphasis on vocabulary for early learners could be essential in closing the gap for Common Core State Standards, reports Sarah D. Sparks from Education Week. The study’s authors, Susan B. Neuman and Tanya S. Wright, “analyzed how kindergarten educators choose and teach new words, both in the instruction that teachers give and in basal-reading books.” Their findings also highlight an important issue of vocabulary gaps between early learners of different demographic groups.

High School Student Interest in STEM

Education Week relayed a recent report from My College Options and STEMconnector noting that “high school students are increasingly interested in pursuing STEM majors and careers.” However, the report, Where are the STEM Students? What are their Career Interests? Where are the STEM Jobs?, also describes a growing gender gap between male and female students interested in STEM. Aloha and welcome to the new

Hawai‘i Educational Policy Center website.

The purpose of the Hawai‘i Educational Policy Center (HEPC) is to provide objective, data-based information in the form of policy briefs, reports, articles, and forums bearing on public and private education policy and practices at all levels. The target audiences for HEPC publications and events are educators, policymakers, and other education stakeholders in the State of Hawai’i.

The center conducts, sponsors, commissions, and/or coordinates analytical studies that inform policy discussions. Examples of issues that are addressed include:

Performance-based assessments
Teacher Resignations
State financial support for public education
Declining enrollments at the University of Hawai’i
Implementing health education standards
Readiness of children to succeed in school
Feasibility of establishing a K-16 student data system
Middle-level education in Hawai’i
Characteristics of upper division dropouts at UH Manoa

The HEPC provides the infrastructure to support data-based decision-making and uses data sources such as the U.S. Census, National Center for Educational Statistics, Public Welfare, and the Hawai’i State Department of Education.

The Hawai‘i Educational Policy Center is a member of the Education Policy Alliance (http://educationpolicyalliance.org), a network of university-based research units that provide high quality research on significant education policy and practice issues.
