UP AFTER SCHOOL
GEAR UP AFTER SCHOOL is the after school program at Kalakaua
Middle School that combines LACE (Language Awareness and Culture Education),
GEAR UP Club, and an Academic Preparation class. GEAR UP AFTER SCHOOL
helps students find new talent and strengths that will help them in high
school, college, and in their future careers.
Homework Assistance Center
College students from UHM, Chaminade, HPU, and HCC have joined
the GEAR UP Homework Assistance Center to tutor KMS students in
Math, Science, History and English.
The Homework
Assistance Center is available to KMS students every Monday, Tuesday
and Thursday from 2:14 pm 4:15 pm. There is also a Saturday
Homework Assistance Center that assists KMS students every Saturday
from 7:45 am to 12:00 pm.

GEAR
UP CLUB
GEAR UP Club is an organization that helps students towards
the goal of college. The purpose of the club is to supplement
the GEAR UP program through college preparation, academic and social
activities. Activities sponsored by GEAR UP Club are not planned
exclusively for GEAR UP students. However, the goal is
to get as much participation from the GEAR UP students as possible.
LACE
Language Awareness and Culture Education (LACE) is an
after school program that allows students to draw on cultures
and languages to build a bridge between home and school. LACE emphasizes
the use of multicultural readings to promote diversity, literacy,
critical thinking, appreciation of cultures in their community and
the improvement of students’ awareness of themselves and others. In
addition, LACE teachers provide after school tutoring and homework
assistance for the LACE students
GEAR UP Academic Prep
Class
The GEAR UP Academic Prep Class will assist students learn
how to take notes, organize their work, read for content and comprehension,
and prepare assignments that will wow their teachers.
