Further Investigations: Density Driven Currents

  1. Gravitational currents in space are similar to gravitational currents in the ocean. An object sinking to the seafloor is similar to an object being moved by the gravitational pull of large objects in space. A spacecraft in a gravitational current can travel with the current and use considerably less fuel and/or reduce travel time. Research how the NASA probe Genesis followed a gravitational current in space in 2004.
  2. Compare your findings in Further Investigation 1 to the way a submarine might use ocean gravitational currents.
  3. Investigate ways global thermohaline circulation might affect organisms living in the ocean.
  4. Investigate the history of how scientists have gathered evidence for global thermohaline circulation.
