Question Set: Circulation in Marginal Seas and Estuaries
  1. Locate the following bodies of water on a map, globe, or computer mapping program: the Columbia River, the Hudson River, the Chesapeake Bay, the San Francisco Bay, and the Great Lakes. What type of estuaries are each of these bodies of water? What physical features may lead to the mixing in each estuary?

  2. Contrast the circulation patterns in the Mediterranean Sea with those in the Baltic Sea. In your own words, explain how each circulation pattern forms.

  3. Explain estuary circulation in salt wedge, slightly stratified, and vertically mixed estuaries in terms of density effects.
