  1. Explain what the phrase “They get along like oil and water” means. 
  2. Explain why nonpolar gasoline would or would not be a better solvent for a salt than water.
  3. Butter and grease are nonpolar compounds. What happens to greasy plates when dunked in plain water? What do you need to thoroughly clean a greasy dish? 
  4. Explain why detergents in water make the mixture a better solvent for ionic, polar, and nonpolar compounds than water alone.
