TPSS 634

Faculty:

Kenneth Leonhardt, Andrew Kaufman, Andrew Kaufman

Goals:

  • To both identify and recognize on sight approximately 200 - 250 plant species and cultivars.
  • Students are expected to learn both botanical and common names; general visual appearance (plant form & character; foliage color, size, shape; flower/fruit color, size, shape, and approximate timing).
  • Other notable features such as cultural preferences for optimum plant vigor, tolerances, and appropriate uses in the designed landscape.
  • Basic horticultural principles, as well as ideas for design uses of plants will be presented in the class through field observations, lectures, discussions, class exercises, and homework assignments.
  • At the completion of this course, students will be familiar with approximately 200 -250 plants well-suited to growing in Hawaii and tropical/landscapes.
  • Students will feel comfortable to describe plants' uses and environmental tolerances, and apply this plant knowledge to landscape architecture projects.
