What started as an after-school program at one intermediate school in 2017 has evolved into an all-encompassing educational experience for youth across Maui. A select group of students at Maui Waena Intermediate School participated in an 8-week interactive learning experience that covered the core topics of the program, which include Agriculture Technology, Animal Science, Careers, Ethnobotany, Food Science, Landscape Design, Plant Science, Soil Science and Sustainability. The pilot program was very well received at the school, and served as a foundation for what the program as a whole has evolved into.

The Diversity in Agriculture Program at University of Hawaii exposes youth to agriculture and careers in agriculture through a variety of avenues including technology, science, business, culture and arts, in addition to hands-on learning. Topics covered through the program include agribusiness, farm-to-table, GPS and biotechnology, food science, sustainability, design, animal science, indigenous plants and career planning. The goal of the program is to both encourage youth to pursue careers in agriculture and sustain local agriculture.

The Diversity in Agriculture Program engages intermediate and high school students from across Maui to encourage learning and increased interest in agriculture in the State of Hawaii. As a result of their involvement and participation in the Diversity in Agriculture Program, students are better able to understand the importance of local agriculture, learn about new career path opportunities and become inspirational leaders in the industry.

We appreciate your interest in the Diversity in Agriculture Program and look forward to working with you soon to learn more about agriculture in Hawai’i!
