The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) is housed at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa within the John A. Burns School of Medicine. Our department is within the University of Hawai‘i System; however, we are located near the John A. Burns School of Medicine Kaka’ako Campus in a professional building.
Oahu, the site of the city of Honolulu, is the most populous of the Hawaiian islands. The home of Waikiki Beach and Pearl Harbor, Oahu also is Hawai‘i’s cultural and social economic center and serves at the trade and commerce center for the vast Pacific Basin. There are six major ethnic groups in Hawai‘i and several different languages and dialects are spoken. Because of our geographic location, the multilingual and multicultural influences on our program are great.
Our program offers one degree option: A Master of Science degree in CSD (emphasis in speech-language pathology). To focus on strengthening the graduate program, we are no longer accepting students for the Bachelor of Science degree in CSD. Our current focus is to expand our services and faculty roster, with the eventual goals of establishing a doctoral program in both Speech Pathology, and also Audiology.
The CSD program has an active role in activities with the local Hawaii Speech-Language Hearing Association. A particular strength of our program is clinical training. The internship and externship facilities in Honolulu and elsewhere are extensive and varied due to our status as the health care center for the Pacific Basin. Therefore, we can offer our students a rich clinical and cultural experience. We are currently located in a professional building adjacent to the John A. Burns School of Medicine in Kaka’ako. We have a modern clinic with a four clinical training rooms, complete with a state of the art audio-visual monitoring system. We also have an audiology suite, complete with a brand new sound booth and audiometers. The relation between faculty and student enhances the students’ experience and training as they prepare for their professional careers. University of Hawai‘i CSD graduates can be found globally, throughout the Pacific Basin and Asia, including Belau, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand; across the Continental U.S., through the Caribbean and Europe and India. We are a quality partner in the drive to provide Hawai‘i’s people with quality in education, clinical services, and research.
