Linda Venenciano & Kathleen Berg

UH Mānoa College of Education (COE) Assistant Professor Linda Venenciano won the Hawai‘i Educational Research Association’s 2013 Distinguished Paper Award. She was invited to present her paper, Developing a Statistical Model to Analyze Algebra Preparedness, at the American Educational Research Association (AERA) conference in San Francisco, California on April 30, 2013.

“It was an honor to be the recipient of an award that celebrates education research,” Venenciano said. “I felt tremendously encouraged by the experience and personally supported by the larger community of researchers.”

Venenciano, who earned her PhD in educational psychology from the COE, serves both the Institute for Teacher Education-Secondary program and the Curriculum Research & Development Group (CRDG). Having taught mathematics for the Hawaiʻi Department of Education (HIDOE) and the University Laboratory School, her research areas include mathematics curriculum and development projects and professional development for building teachers’ pedagogical knowledge and practices consistent with the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice.

The award-winning paper was an extension of Venenciano’s research at CRDG with the Measure Up mathematics project and Davydov’s theory of developmental instruction. Her current research projects include developing mathematics curriculum for the HIDOE high school course, Modeling Our World I, and expanding the professional learning community, Math Teachers’ Circle of Hawai‘i, which she co-founded in 2011 with Dr. Michelle Manes of the UH Mānoa Department of Mathematics and Mrs. Seanyelle Yagi of the HIDOE.
