The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa College of Education (COE) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Barbara Dougherty as the fourth Director of the Curriculum Research & Development Group (CRDG). Former Richard G. Miller Endowed Chair of Mathematics Education at the University of Missouri-Columbia, Dougherty was previously the Director of the Center for Excellence in Science, Mathematics & Engineering Education at Iowa State University and the University of Mississippi’s Center for Educational Research and Evaluation.

“I am very honored to be part of CRDG,” Dougherty said. “The expertise in research and development across the CRDG personnel is amazing. I’m looking forward to facilitating the work of this group in moving us forward.”

This position at the COE is a homecoming for Dougherty who was a member of CRDG’s Hawai‘i Algebra Learning Project team in the 1990s and early 2000s and who has had working relationships with colleagues across the college’s departments ever since. As a distinguished national leader of mathematics research, Dougherty has a deep understanding of and experience with the foundational principles and programs of CRDG. Her vast record of publication includes numerous books, refereed and invited chapters, peer-reviewed articles, curriculum materials, evaluation reports, and multimedia publications. She has experience in grant writing and management activities that includes over $17 million in grants and contracts.

Among her many honors and awards, Dougherty was nominated and elected to the Iowa Academy of Education, selected for the Iowa State University Emerging Leaders Academy, and presented with an Outstanding Research Award as well as an Outstanding Grant Writer Award. She has served on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics as both a board member and an executive committee member. She currently serves on the U.S. Department of Education, Institute of Education Sciences, Grant Review, Mathematics and Science Panel, and is a co-organizer for the International Congress of Mathematics Education.

Dougherty received her BSE in Special Education and MA in Mathematics from Northeast Missouri State University and her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction-Mathematics Education from the University of Missouri.

“We are fortunate to have someone of Dr. Dougherty’s experience and standing at the helm of the most important and productive curriculum development center in Hawai‛i,” Dean Donald B. Young said. “Dr. Dougherty brings a breadth and depth of knowledge and experience in research, curriculum development, and professional development both nationally and internationally that will ensure CRDG’s prominence into the future.”

An organized research unit in the COE since 1966, CRDG has been serving the educational community locally, nationally, and internationally by conducting research and creating, evaluating, disseminating, and supporting educational programs that serve students, teachers, parents, and other educators in grades preK–12.
