2017 Camp Leaders:

Cynthia Ning – Camp Director and Lead Language Instructor. Associate Director at the Center for Chinese Studies and US Co-director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Hawai‘i. Author, Encounters: Chinese Language and Culture, Communicating in Chinese & Exploring in Chinese, Yale University Press.

Joanne Shang – Lead Language Instructor. Chinese teacher at Rye Country Day School; AP Chinese reader for the College Board; co-author of Barron’s AP Chinese Language and Culture Exam Preparation Guide. Author of Encounters: Chinese Language and Culture Online Workbook.

Chunman Gissing – Lead Language Instructor. Examiner, International Baccalaureate Organization. Previously taught at the University Preparatory Academy in Seattle, WA, and was vice principal of the Beijing International School in China.

Amy Shen – Lead Language Instructor. PhD student in Education, Columbia University. Previously taught at the Berkshire School and the Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy, both in Vermont, and the Head Royce School in San Francisco. Author of the Annotated Instructor’s Edition of Encounters: Chinese Language and Culture.

Xiaowen Deng – Assistant Language Lead Instructor. Professor of Chinese, Beijing Foreign Studies University; Chinese instructor, Confucius Institute of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Specializes in translation studies.

Shuangmei Wang – Assistant Language Lead Instructor. Professor of Chinese, Beijing Foreign Studies University; Chinese instructor, Confucius Institute of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Specializes in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language.

Jiayin Wang – Teaching Assistant. MA student in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Beijing Foreign Studies University; volunteer instructor, Confucius Institute of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

Yue Zhang – Teaching Assistant. MA student in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Beijing Foreign Studies University; volunteer instructor, Confucius Institute of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

Xiu Zhang – Martial Arts Lead Instructor. Assistant Professor of Chinese at the Defense Language Institute’s Foreign Language Center. Founder and chief instructor of the Hawai‘i Wushu Center; former leader, Shandong Provincial Wushu Team; former Wushu instructor, Beijing University of Physical Education.

Vincent Gante – Assistant Martial Arts Instructor. Martial arts teacher of the Hawai‘i Wushu Center.

Jialin Sun (Sunny) – Camp Coordinator since UH Manoa’s very first STARTALK program in 2007. Project Coordinator at UH Manoa’s Center for Chinese Studies and the Confucius Institute.

Yen Chun – Camp Public Affairs Coordinator. Director and Vice President of Dr. Sun Yat-sen Hawaii Foundation and Director of Chinese Chamber of Commerce. Yen is consultant for US-China business and works closely with the Soong Ching Ling Foundation in Beijing and Shanghai on cultural and educational exchanges.
