Emiko Taniguchi

Emiko Taniguchi (Assistant Professor) specializes in interpersonal and family communication as well as cross-cultural communication. Her research centers on the interface between communication process and health issues with a focus on body image and weight management. The primary foci of her work involve identifying mechanisms through which parent-child communication is related to young adult children’s psychosocial adjustment (e.g., self-esteem) and body image. This work is grounded in confirmation theory and scholarship on parenting and child development. In addition to family related contexts, her research involves appearance-related “posts” (e.g., fat talk) on social media and their effects on users’ body image. She is currently interested in the processes of information management and social support, primarily in health contexts (e.g., weight issues, mental health).
