Tutoring

Flagship tutors are your language learning coaches! They will give you opportunities to practice Chinese so that you perform better and achieve more. The tutoring program is about going above and beyond what you’re doing in class so that you have a strong foundation, are able to use Chinese in a wide variety of situations, and become an increasingly independent language learner.

As you progress through the levels, you’ll focus on different things – all tailored to your own strengths and weaknesses. Here’s a general idea of what you’ll do:

Beginning: 101-202: Develop a strong foundation of basic Chinese grammar and vocabulary. Students will spend about 1.5 hours weekly in tutoring at this level.

Beginning: 301-402: Expand the topics you are comfortable talking about and work on increasing your fluency and comfort using Chinese. You’ll start to practice language learning strategies so that you can become increasingly independent learners. Students spend about 2.5 hours each week in tutoring.

Pre-Capstone: Use Chinese in your field of study. Tutoring complements the academic and professional coursework you’ll be working on in class. You’ll continue to focus on language learning and use strategies that will help you during the Capstone Year and are encouraged to become increasingly independent learners.
